SMARTRISK Board chairman, Ned Levitt, has a deeply personal reason for his involvement with the national charity. He lost his 18-year-old daughter Stacey after she was hit by a car while out jogging and listening to music over headphones. Several media outlets covered Mr. Levitt’s story as he presented No Regrets Live to students at Northern Secondary School. Click here to watch media coverage of the event.

The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario has honoured the SMARTRISK No Regrets Live program with a 2011 “Let’s Keep Kids Out of Hospital” award for shows it performed in the Ottawa region. CHEO recognizes those who contribute to the community and help make a difference in the lives of children and youth. Laureen Harper, wife of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, was on hand for the Oct. 19, 2011 ceremonies. In the letter announcing SMARTRISK had won in the injury prevention category, CHEO said, “Your initiative was singled out by our external Selection Committee as being over and above other activities in the community addressing Injury Prevention.” SMARTRISK is very pleased to accept an award that recognizes its youth programming is helping to keep kids out of hospital. We also agree with CHEO’s opinion as stated on its website, “Preventing illness and injuries is a far better prescription for health and well-being than having to treat them.”

Young Canadian drivers hear parents and police warning them it’s risky to drive while distracted. Yet research suggests many young drivers still text, fiddle with music players or get distracted by lively chats with their friends in the passenger seats. Maybe they need to hear the messages from their peers instead, delivered in creative new ways. That’s the basis for a nationwide social media campaign hosted by SMARTRISK, Northern Secondary School and Leo Hayes and funded by State Farm that will take place in up to 100 Canadian high schools beginning this fall. One of the main components of the program is a national multi-media competition. Students from all No Regrets schools are invited to participate! Click here to learn more about this exciting competition!

Given the growing amount of research pointing to parents’ influence in keeping their teens injury-free, SMARTRISK is working, with the generous support of State Farm, to develop educational resources for parents through a mix of workshops, resources and presentations. We are in the process of conducting a nationwide survey of parents and their children to help us understand how teens feel their parents influence their risk behaviours and how we can best address safety concerns of teens and their parents. Please stay tuned for updated resources.
