SMARTRISK No Regrets Live is an internationally acclaimed presentation that encourages young people to choose to take smart risks. The goal is to help youth see the risks in their everyday lives and to take those risks in the smartest way possible so they can enjoy life to the fullest. SMARTRISK No Regrets Live combines a DVD presentation with a live talk given by an injury survivor, who speaks candidly about how the injury has affected his or her life, while presenting positive choices that can be made to reduce the risk of injury. Our positive and empowering approach to preventing injury with smart thinking has reached over one million Canadian youth. Combining a live presenter with high impact and high-energy video footage sends a message to audiences that resonates time and time again.

SMARTRISK No Regrets Live is not a safety show. Ask any teenager about safety, and they will say: “Safety sucks! It’s boring! It’s for losers!” Why? Most safety programs tell teenagers what they are forbidden to do, and warn them of the harsh consequences of disobeying. But teenagers believe they are invincible and resist being restricted, and are not dissuaded by these negative messages.

In just under an hour, SMARTRISK No Regrets Live takes 400 students per show on an emotional trip that provokes reflection. It helps them discover that their passion for living is rewarding only if they stay safe through managing risks. Every SMARTRISK No Regrets Live show is rewarding. Teenagers often express surprise at how much their thinking can be challenged by a one-hour show.

The show is 45 minutes in length and consists of a speaker (someone who has experienced a preventable injury or someone who has been deeply affected by a preventable injury, such as a parent or a driver); a video component; and a live question and answer period.

New for the 2009-2010 School Year

In order to extend our reach we have fully revamped SMARTRISK No Regrets Live for the 2009-2010 school year. The direct benefits to hosts are lower overall costs and more availability throughout the school year. Hosts can now book shows more easily on the dates they prefer and at a substantially reduced cost. The show will continue to feature a high-impact video presentation with a live speaker and include an interactive question and answer component. Audience feedback and our research indicate these are the most powerful elements of the presentation, and we have ensured that these aspects have been retained.

Most schools and communities have ready access to screens, projectors and sound equipment, and can arrange for these at no or minimal cost. SMARTRISK will work with hosts to coordinate the technical aspects of the show, ending the practice of transporting our own equipment around the country at great cost.
